Tp ep19 ep20 ep21 and fixes

Ret Samys requested to merge tp-ep19-ep20-ep21-and-fixes into master

This... is the end of book 2! I ordered the German print version of book 1, so, soon, I'll be able to dream of what a toki pona print would look like. =)

Technical notes:

  • That's a new one =) There is an error - that I am not responsible for (I think) =D I'm going to assume that's going to be fixed anyway because it's a transcript error for the French version of the unpublished episode. So I'm guessing that I can make a merge request anyway?
  • Transcript is missing a text field in E19P01: The English text was "No use in watching you dig...", the toki pona text is "mi lukin e pali sina la, pali ni li ante ala..." - I have no idea why it didn't generate that

Questions (I don't know if I should make tickets for these, but here I go):

  • I would like to change the title to "jan Pepa & soweli Kawa" in the episodes, apart from this guide, is there something I have to pay attention to?
  • I'd also like to try to make the website's title align on the head banner/topmenu label like I did here - but PEPPERCARROT_TITLE is used in other places than that, so I wonder what I can do... I don't think adding a shorthand would work because it's just saved in an array. Adding another variable won't work, because it's all preset in header.php. Of course you could change header.php, but in order for it to work on all languages, it would probably have to just filter out the html tags around the text. But even if I found a nice way to filter out html tags from $plxShow->lang, would we want to put in the extra performance? Or add PEPPERCARROT_FORMATTED_TITLE and have it empty as a default in the lang file, and if it's empty, fill it out with PEPPERCARROT_TITLE, and put that in the head banner/topmenu label in header.php... eh, all probably too convoluted. Maybe I'll find a way, one day.
  • I don't know if there's any interest for this, but given I spend time there, I thought it'd be nice to have a P&C server on Discord. Now, I wouldn't ask you to divert your attention even more by yet another channel, but what's your opinion on fan groups on different plattforms @Deevad ?

Translation notes:

  • Part of this merge request is a couple of fixes for small stuff, like onomatopoeia to make it uniform with the rest of the series. This likely won't be the last time I'll do that.
  • Likewise, I made a change that I consider more substantial: I changed all names of the schools/magic systems.
    • This started with Ah, which I tokiponized to Aa. Back then, I took a toki pona word an capitalized it to make it a name. Aa technically doesn't conform to toki pona phonotactics, but lengthening "a" is very common
    • However, all other magic names were just unaltered capitalized toki pona words and after a while, with different styles and such, the distinction between Pakala and pakala wasn't all that great. Plus, Hippiah became Pipona, which nagged at me because of the single-word pi, even though it was just a name.
    • So my compromise for all of this is the following rule: Still make all magic schools/systems out of toki pona words, but have them all end in "aa"
    • This breaks phonotactics slightly, but my defense is: 1) Chaosah, Hippiah, Zombiah, Aquah etc. are pretty much the equivalent of what the lengthened aa does, it isn't standard English phonotactics, but it still works and is pronounced roughly the same (in both languages) 2) All of those things are standardised now and look distinctly different from other things. 3) I'm kind of just merging different toki pona words together, the final word happens to be "a" (weak defense) 4) Having an "a" as an end word almost fixes ungrammatical constructions inside names (yes, this doesn't matter for names, but it bothers me), like pi phrases, and makes it easier for me to just add a la(+a) at the end if I feel like it
    • Ultimately, this might be temporary. All names generally are; if there is a better way that works, it should replace all the things consistently. While I know some people read my translation and it makes me very happy (thanks David for sharing that tweet), and I keep communicating with other toki pona speakers, it's too bad I'm the only one working on the toki pona translation (I like it, though, and I know how much work it is) and I am not the authority on the language. So, yeah, I might revert the changes if it's unliked, I might do something completely different in the future. Who knows, maybe it's less controversial than I think
  • E19
    • "red fruits" and "purple fruits" for "tomatoes" and "aubergines", of course
    • =D =D =D Cayenne's poetry! I forgot about that! I went with a very unliteral translation, that would have been clunky, but I hope I captured the tone and some Chaosah-aligned values
    • Finally, modifiers to "mi" actually refer to a different version of a singular person, as sewi intended! ;-)
    • Chaosah Sutra was another thing I had to think about. Unpa Pakalaa ultimately seemed like a good (and short) fit. The word play is quite different now, but I think it works well
    • Glass and metal are too close in toki pona, so I allowed myself to instead sort it in "hard/metal" and "containers"
  • Ep 21
    • Translating the newspaper gave me the opportunity to appreciate the details (and to put those in the context of the unpublished episode). This was both fun and a lot of work to translate because of space constraints
    • Lots of new names. This is where the new rule for making up magic system names came in handy. Also, the wiki is a superb resource
    • For Spirulina, Lord Azeirf and Queen Ajel, I really had to think. I wasn't sure if Spirulina would be better as Arthrospira, but no one calls it like that except scientists. Azeirf and Ajel where a different number, however. So HUGE thanks to @ArloJamesBarnes and all others who put in all the work to fill out Wikidata! Their documentation and excellent (nicely extensive) metadata helped me figure out how much of an absolute nerd @Deevad is, and I could reverse-engineer the original forms ;-) to put them back together in their tokiponized form. I love it.
    • The new credits section is so much better to work with, less space restrains. On the other hand, there are also more roles to translate that I don't always 100% understand - but I think I've worded it in a way that makes clear what they did
