a) pdf linking existing binary in place into "filters" in my per-user directory `ps2pdf -> /usr/bin/pstopdf` not sure if this actually works. I did run the index. Does not look like it. Still, MacOS does have pstopdf which differs in filename only. I believe it did work earlier when I linked it into the app's filters-directory.
b) rtf MacOS provides textutil on the commandline and the versatile TextEdit with GUI. libreoffice to me seems too heavy to use.
per user mimeconf:
`text/rtf = exec textutil -convert html -stdout ;mimetype=text/html`
per user mimeview:
`text/rtf = exec textutil -convert html -stdout ;mimetype=text/html` `application/rtf = open -a TextEdit %f`
however GUI-preview does not work. It appeas rclrtf.py would use "unrtf" if it existed. Opening with TextEdit does.
c) audio theres /usr/bin/afinfo the -i option displays a lot. There is an option to produce xml-structured output. I have not integrated it yet.
MacOS does contain a lot of simple tools. Sometimes these hide inside Automator-Actions.https://framagit.org/medoc92/recoll/-/issues/248Abstract doesn't work correctly with certain characters2024-03-26T07:17:40ZJuha HeikkinenAbstract doesn't work correctly with certain charactersSuppose I have an indexed test file with following lines:

Now if I search `recollq -A 'a'` the abstract looks something like this:
`a-b a-b a-b a+b a+b a+b a_b a_b a_b` etc.
The middle characters are lost in the abstract. This can be confusing if the real result is e.g. `firstname__lastname` and the matching snippet is shown as `firstname_lastname`. The `-d` shows the correct line.
I have tested this with version 1.34.3 and also compiling from git the current master with Xapian 1.4.22. I did not test all special characters so there are probably more examples of this.https://framagit.org/medoc92/recoll/-/issues/249mod_wsgi4 name difference for FreeBSD2024-03-26T07:16:57ZDavid Gesselmod_wsgi4 name difference for FreeBSDOn the page https://www.recoll.org/pages/recoll-webui-install-wsgi.html, there is a reference to installing the package "ap24-mod_wsgi4." The OK and Cancel buttons are not displayed at all. There's no vertical scrollbar. I tried dragging the page up and got the drag icon, but the page didn't budge. Resizing the width didn't bring the bottom up.
Affected on my display (I don't know if users with natively shorter displays have the same problem with other dialog pages and the lack of standard ellipses (really suspension points) in menu commands means that I can't know which menu commands will invoke dialogless processes I don't want to invoke yet and which will bring up dialogs before invoking any other process):
Preferences > GUI configuration > User interface
Preferences > GUI configuration > Shortcuts
My laptop display is 1366x768 and has no larger setting. Cell phones, of course, have natively shorter displays. I tried, on my laptop, reorienting to portrait, but that also turned everything displayed 90 degrees, which most users won't like, and on my machine it made the cursor harder to maneuver.

The immediate fix is to install package python3-recoll. The cause is that we do not automatically install "recommended" packages, but python3-recoll is listed in recollcmd only under "Recommends", not "Depends".https://framagit.org/medoc92/recoll/-/issues/239Build errors on Macos - Apple Silicon2024-02-13T16:51:41ZChe KonBuild errors on Macos - Apple SiliconI tried to build from source using these instructions -

I assume o in org occurs before r in recoll, hence the first icon shown is pointing to the search provider which does not launch recoll:
```shell
$ find /usr/share/applications/ -type f -iname '*recoll*.desktop'
/usr/share/applications/org.recoll.Recoll.SearchProvider.desktop
/usr/share/applications/recoll-searchgui.desktop
```
I've attempted to find a way to hide `org.recoll.Recoll.SearchProvider.desktop` as it has no normal open action and seems to be related only to gnome search provider integration. My failed attempts include:
- Copying the desktop entry into `~/.local/share/applications` and adding either `NoDisplay=true` or `OnlyShowIn=` (intentionally empty) hoping it would hide the menu item confusion, but still let the search provider work. It hides everything, including the search provider integration. This is arguably an upstream gnome bug: [Show results from search providers which have `NoDisplay=true`](https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/3544)
- Simply deleting `/usr/share/applications/org.recoll.Recoll.SearchProvider.desktop` which breaks the search provider integration because `/usr/share/gnome-shell/search-providers/org.recoll.Recoll.search-provider.ini` sets `DesktopId=org.recoll.Recoll.SearchProvider.desktop`?
<https://developer.gnome.org/SearchProvider/> also fails to clarify the relationship between normal .desktop entry files with `[Desktop Entry]` and `[Shell Search Provider]`, so there seems to be no obvious way to avoid causing another recoll icon and app entry. Sadly, the gnome dev doc I found does not explain if or why a `[Desktop Entry]` is also required for a search provider to work. Perhaps there is some way to integrate search providers without a desktop entry.
I took a look at `/usr/share/gnome-shell/search-providers/gnome-terminal-search-provider.ini`.
Also checked:
```shell
$ dpkg-query --listfiles gnome-terminal | grep -iP '((search)|(desktop)|(dbus))'
/usr/share/applications/org.gnome.Terminal.desktop
/usr/share/dbus-1
/usr/share/dbus-1/services
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.gnome.Terminal.service
/usr/share/gnome-shell/search-providers
/usr/share/gnome-shell/search-providers/gnome-terminal-search-provider.ini
Seems the terminal search provider does not add a 2bd desktop entry. It only uses one entry.
[gssp-recoll-1.1.1.tar.gz](https://www.lesbonscomptes.com/recoll/downloads/gssp-recoll-1.1.1.tar.gz), the file referred on [Recoll's Documentation](https://www.lesbonscomptes.com/recoll/pages/download.html), didn't fix it. However, what worked for me was to manually download [gssp-recoll_1.1.1-1~ppa2~kinetic1_all.deb](https://launchpad.net/~recoll-backports/+archive/ubuntu/recoll-1.15-on/+files/gssp-recoll_1.1.1-1~ppa2~kinetic1_all.deb) from [Recoll's Launchpad](https://launchpad.net/~recoll-backports/+archive/ubuntu/recoll-1.15-on/+packages).
Noteworthy, the provided gssp-recoll version (22.10 - kinetic) works well, despite running on the latest Ubuntu (23.10 - mantic).https://framagit.org/medoc92/recoll/-/issues/93Windows: Recoll 1.31 crashing2024-01-12T14:32:37Zeu2021Windows: Recoll 1.31 crashingHi,
I just started using Recoll on Windows, but it crashes if I try to open Index Configuration or if I try to Stop Indexing.
Thanks,https://framagit.org/medoc92/recoll/-/issues/234Indexing of compressed archives / includes/excludes2024-01-09T17:28:36ZMichael NiewöhnerIndexing of compressed archives / includes/excludesI used recoll for indexing a huge directory tree with thousands of files of various types, including binaries, source code, PDF files, text files, various archive types (ZIP, 7zip, rar). I only wanted to index PDFs, inside and outside of archives. Thus, I added the config "onlyNames = \*.pdf". It turned out, I needed to add "\*.zip \*.7z \*.rar" as well, to make recoll process archives. However, this lead to indexing of the whole archives, including any other file types (source code, binaries, etc.) inside it.
Having a quick look at the code showed that:
- rclzip.py/rcl7z.py do not honor onlyNames
- rclzip.py/rcl7z.py only honor explicit excludes ("skippedNames" and/or "zipSkippedNames")
- other archive filters neither honor onlyNames nor skippedNames
I wonder, if the following ideas make sense, to improve that situation:
- Do not filter any includes/excludes inside filters but move all that code to recoll itself. This brings includes/excludes support to other filters as well, while not repeating code over and over again.
- Make recoll honor onlyNames/skippedNames for archives as well. (Maybe as a optional feature / checkbox in settings.)
This didn't use to happen but now it does. We were going to change the conf file to reflect something we saw online - changing the settings to -1, -1, -1, but discovered that they were already setup like this.
Our compu setup is
Operating System: PCLinuxOS 2023
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.8
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.110.0
Qt Version: 5.15.6
Kernel Version: 6.3.5-pclos1 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 8 × AMD Ryzen 5 3400G with Radeon Vega Graphics
Memory: 5.7 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon Vega 11 Graphics
Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Product Name: B450 AORUS M
Maybe if we turned off Folding@Home. The CPUs are running at 25% and when Recoll runs it increases to about 37%.
Any help would be appreciated.
This is a really great program and almost always finds our files.
After upgrading from Debian 11 where everythin worked okay, now I get constant errors and interruptions of the index. Missing Helpers are: "catdvi (application/x-dvi) lyx (application/x-lyx)" but I think, I don't have those file formats. Sometime all my RAM is being filled until it reaches 99% or so and then recoll quits.
So I'l liste some of the errors form the log:
