Trouble installing on shared host (OVH), just times out.

I have this very strange error when trying to install Hubzilla 3.2.1 on my basic webhost provided by OVH. I have setup a subdomain for it hub.mydomain.com and have confirmed it working and with SSL certificate.
But when I upload the hubzilla files via FTP to the respective directory and try to open the site in a browser, 9 out of 10 times it just times out:
504 Gateway Time-out The server didn't respond in time.
In the browser console I get the following error if it times out:
The character encoding of the HTML document was not declared. The document will render with garbled text in some browser configurations if the document contains characters from outside the US-ASCII range. The character encoding of the page must be declared in the document or in the transfer protocol.
I tried setting the environment to php7.0, 7.1 and 7.2 all with the same effect.
The strange thing is that the few times it does somewhat work it seems to be (slow) but ok, the first installation view shows that all the requirements are met and I even once managed to get to the next screen where I can input the database. But this is really at most 1 out of 10 tries.
Most regular php websites work fine on this host, although OVH is known to behave a bit strangely, so it might be a problem on their side. But I wonder if anyone has an idea how to solve this? I don't have ssh access to the server, only ftp.
For me the ability to (theoretically) install Hubzilla on a basic LAMP host really is one of the outstanding features, as you can easily have a more or less private instance for you and your family... but I am also wondering (unrelated to the above issue): can I configure Hubzilla to work on a 200mb mysql db satifactory for a few users? Attached files and such are are not stored in the database right? I also noticed that it doesn't seem to give the database entries a prefix (like "hz_") which would be really nice to have in case you want to share the db with another basic web-service.
Thanks a lot in advance for the help.
