This started worrying me, so i had PHPMyAdmin optimize the tables.
A few days later HZ crashed (unclear, if related to DB size and/or optimizing)
I ended up having to install from scratch.
**Now the DB is already up at 1.2 GB after only 7 days.**
I do have /admin/site "Expiration period in days for imported (grid/network) content" set to 4 days, however it don't look like it is doing much.
I suspect the public stream as one big source of size issues, among that espcially images - and **i have several questions:**
**Is DB size sthg. that should be watched?**
**If so, what can be done against DB size issues?**
Can i prevent a public stream from writing to DB at all and instead just watch a sort of live stream, that expires posts from th DB aftr just a few hours unless i interact?
Do we have an option to batch delete posts with media files (images) from public stream posts?
The same would be helpful for posts of connections.
Alternatively, do we have an option to not store media files in DB at all?
I'd like to keep my own media files.
I can't find much help in /help there, and would be greatful for pointers.
**Thank you in advance!**

Ignore/mute, but not block, because i'd like to leave a way open for ignored/muted users to follow me, if they so desire.
There is no button/arrow menu on the user icons in a stream for example, which would allow me to do so.
Network & public streams would greatly benefit from such feature, as they are great sources for the curious mind to find new & valuable connections.

However, I am naive/dummy/newbie in the sense how the federation works in a world wide web perspective, that is
- how can I be logged into Hubzilla (or Zap) and post/comment/connect to someone in Mastodon
- how can I be logged into Mastodon and post/comment/connect to someone in Hubzilla
- how can I be logged into Hubzilla (or Zap) and post/comment/connect to someone in Diaspora

...Question / Help :
I would like to show my Hubzilla site in a pre-determined language - for example, let us assume it is a stand-alone site catering to a small niche and ONLY language of my choice (as the only admin) is all that I need.
As reported here https://framagit.org/hubzilla/core/-/issues/1635 , I also expected that VIA admin/site, if I have set System Language as some XYZ-LNG-CODE language and provided that the needed file was there in /view/XYZ-LNG-CODE/ then any visitor anywhere in the world, irrespective of their language setting of their browser, would see only the XYZ language.
I will try to explain this NECESSITY a little more. Say, we are a small South-Asian population who speaks a language called "Lotus" which is not spoken anywhere else and is not needed by anyone else too (just an example name of a language, not real). Now this small population of ours have got scattered due to various reasons all over the globe : France, German, Japan, Korea etc etc and their browser language in their office (from where via Wi-Fi they access this niche Hubzilla site) are varied : France, German, Japanese etc etc BUT on first access and thereafter always they will be able to see the site in the language "Lotus" and Lotus only - nothing else. They need not install extra the Language (language selector) app - instead the first sight of the site itself is already made to appear in the Lotus Language.
Thus, what I mean to say, if not via admin/site, how can I hard-code to show the site ONLY in one fixed language irrespective of the various language settings that various browsers across the globe may have. I think there was some coding instruction, some code to add or alter in some file somewhere inside the core that would have done this - some deeper or hidden configuration changes - but even though madly searching for it again I am not now finding it in the Hubzilla documentation and help files.
Please note : this is not an edge case or "scratch your own itch" case, many and really many need these outside of the large continents. **And also KINDLY note : this is wanted as a default behavior/display, not something to be fiddled with app** installing, settings, toggling languages etc etc, meaning just as magic, smooth and transparent as Remote Auth of Hubzilla is!
So, it will be great if someone can tell me (which file, what lines of code make this happen: "Hubzilla uses the language setting of the visitors browser to determine the language for the UI") so that I may try change/comment it out for the time-being for some temporary solution at least.
Some added questions, if included in https://hubzilla.org/help/en/, will be great
1) How to change the language strings in English itself? will adding a necessary strings.php in folder "en" suffice, for example if I just want to say "Discover and Connect with others" instead of the default "Find and Connect with others" OR "Explore the directory" instead of the default "View the directory" etc etc .. you get the idea, I think.
2) So ... System Language set VIA admin/site (by the admin or super-admin, suppose where there is only ONE admin) is ONLY a fall-back language and not meant to be the displayed language irrespective of the visitors' browser language? :(
3) If installing Language App is a must, can there be some instructions in https://hubzilla.org/help/en/ how to make this a default-ON app, with a chosen language by the admin, as always installed and always ON by the site-admin for all new users (just as Photo or Files App which already comes installed and active and users do not have to install it themselves)
If I have been not able to explain clearly let me know please. I was forced to migrate my server to a new host. My server's database was from before transition from latin1 to utf8mb4, and it contains posts from 2014 onwards.
As far as I remember, throughout this period the database went through all updates without error, or if there was any I manually fixed and checked. And it worked fine under the previous server, always running on the master branch.
However:
- Its tables showed a mix of encodings/collations
- utf8mb4(_general_ci): propertystorage, push_subscriber, principals, register, rendezvous_groups, rendezvous_markers, rendezvous_members, schedulingobjects, calendarinstances, locks, addressbookchanges, addressbooks, calendarchanges, listeners, pchan, users, calendarsubscriptions, cards, groupmembers, calendarobjects, calendars
- latin1(_swedish_ci): all `oauth_*` tables
- utf8(_general_ci): all other tables
- Its char fields still used type `char(255)`.
- It used the old engine MyISAM
I dumped and imported it into the new server. So, assuming the dump+import exactly replicated the database, the only difference between source and target are the server and database character sets which changed from `latin1(_swedish_ci)` to `utf8mb4(_general_ci)`.
However, in the new server, a bunch of things were broken, among which:
- non-ASCII text from any column no longer displayed correctly.
- I couldn't post anymore due to encoding issues in updates and collation mismatching in comparisons.
The hints I had about this encoding issue were:
- on the mariadb command line, text appears garbled both on the old and new servers.
- when I run the following on the mariadb command line, supposed to fix a "double-encoding" problem, the text is displayed correctly on both servers: `CONVERT(BINARY(CONVERT(some_text_column USING latin1)) USING utf8mb4)`.
Given these hints, and reading [this](http://mysql.rjweb.org/doc.php/charcoll#life_cycle_of_a_character) and [this](https://mariadb.com/kb/en/set-names/), my suspicion is that Hubzilla does not properly sets the dialect of the connection (e.g., with SET NAMES), so if the server defaults to a client charset different from hubzilla's actual charset, the data gets stored corrupted (doubly-encoded) - but as long as you don't change the corrupted setup (utf8 client + latin1 set names + utf8 column, [see here](http://mysql.rjweb.org/doc.php/charcoll#how_mangling_happens_on_insert)) it will work fine.
Now, on the new server, the connection is properly established as utf8mb4, because that's the current default for mariadb on debian (but wasn't the case for the old [nondebian server](https://mariadb.com/kb/en/differences-in-mariadb-in-debian-and-ubuntu/) nor when I first created the database). As a result, non-ASCII text gets garbled.
Here's an example of errors when posting a message.

Long story short, I had to manually convert every char, varchar, text and mediumtext column on every table to the correct charset+collation, then update their contents using the aforementioned command to undo double-encoding. I tried to automate as much as possible, but there were still some bumps that required manual intervention, like data being too long for the new type (and, to make things worse, I had left the hub on for a short period before I realized things were broken, so some recent insertions were already properly encoded and trying to undo the double-encoding threw an error).
Everything seems to be working fine now, there were some other details like columns that lacked defaults after the migration, but I can only assume that was due to some command I run while fixing the encoding issue.
Now, what I take from this for now is that Hubzilla should set names at connection time: `SET NAMES utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_general_ci;`, but I'm no SQL expert.
I'll share here some of the statements tha helped me with the task:
```
SET NAMES utf8mb4 COLLATE utf8mb4_general_ci; # because oddly the command line client connects as utf8 not utf8mb4.
SHOW VARIABLES WHERE Variable_name LIKE 'character\_set\_%' OR Variable_name LIKE 'collation%'; # to check the collation
# the essential trick, first change collation then undo double-encoding:
alter table tab modify column col char(191) character set utf8mb4;
UPDATE tab SET col = CONVERT(BINARY(CONVERT(col USING latin1)) USING utf8mb4);
# attention: the statement generators below assume every column is doubly encoded
# tempalte for "255" columns (do this for char and varchar)
SET @old_column_type = "char(255)"
SET @new_column_type = "char(191)"
(SELECT
concat(
'alter table ', table_name, ' modify column ', column_name, ' ', @new_column_type, ' character set utf8mb4;',
'update ', table_name, ' set ', column_name, ' = CONVERT(BINARY(CONVERT(', column_name, ' USING latin1)) USING utf8mb4);'
)
FROM information_schema.columns
WHERE table_schema = DATABASE() and column_type = @old_column_type
order by table_name, column_name)
# for non-"255" columns, preserving column_type
(SELECT
concat(
'alter table ', table_name, ' modify column ', column_name, ' ', column_type, ' character set utf8mb4;',
'update ', table_name, ' set ', column_name, ' = CONVERT(BINARY(CONVERT(', column_name, ' USING latin1)) USING utf8mb4);'
)
FROM information_schema.columns
WHERE table_schema = DATABASE() and column_type not like "%char(191%"
order by table_name, column_name)
```
**Pay uttermost attention not to undo double-encoding on the same column twice!**
Finally, I know some types are not exact in my database. For one, in addressbooks `displayname` is char(191) (converted from char(255) during migration), while in the schema it is varchar(255) - no idea why it wasn't changed to 191. There are a few other cases. I wish there was MariaDB command to apply all column definitions from a schema dump to a database.

I love the rich formatting options aleady there. But when trying to add an emoji to a post I was composing, I found out that it doesn't have an option to insert emoji. I had to look on the internet and copy paste it on my post which is not ideal for everyday use cases. So having a built in insert emoji feature would be a great time-saver. I use Mastodon too and their insert emoji popup seems to be ok.
Just wondering, is there any plans to include a feature to add emojis in the form interface?https://framagit.org/hubzilla/core/-/issues/1504Upgrade Hubzilla2023-04-11T11:53:54ZjameswillUpgrade HubzillaHi,

Shot in the dark, but since both Hubzilla and Nextcloud use webdav, any chance to support the federated file exchange feature that Nextcloud, Owncloud and Pydio are using? It basically just seems to be a easy to use UI to exchange remote access to webdav resources, no special tech to implement.

While filling in such a comment, there are some fields, there is an email (required):

I also checked database as admin (tables: item, iconfig, account) - and did not find filled email of approved comment (but found 'Your website URL' in iconfig table)
The value of this requred field does not seem to be saved. The channel owner may need to see the value of this field to get feedback to an unregistered commentator.
