My dream goal about the possible of this project: many ideas of features to add, and whom could benefit from it
Hi there again,
So in the last few weeks, I've been researching quite extensively on GitHub and Internet, and my goal is the following...
An easy-to-install, browser-side, client-side, cache-ready, offline-usable, mobile-usable (!) Jupyter-based IDE that works with Python + main extensions (I see that it works for matplotlib, so probably numpy and others are perfectly integrated) ... + OCaml + C ! (cf https://framagit.org/casatir/basthon-kernel/-/issues/11) and have at least the two features I use to most in notebooks: %timeit
in Python, and RISE mode in Jupyter.
I'm extra motivated to work hard on Basthon to move it to the next level, which is add all these features!
To motivate this, let's quickly show that they should probably not be that hard to achieve!
- browser-side: already done!
- client-side: same!
- Installable on desktop: already easy, 3 seconds using https://webcatalog.app/
- Offline usable:
- on my laptop, I just installed Basthon Console (using WebCatalog, so just three clics, no .zip to install and extract), and it seems to work with no change offline, using WebCatalog, but it's probably fragile until we add something like "application manifest" (I discovered these yesterday, but in a few hours was able to hack BetterOCaml to be able to install it on my phone - even if it's not yet usable offline as we have not yet added web workers) and "web workers"
- I also installed Basthon notebook, and it gives me "Error loading notebook" - I think this can solved by either forcing to download more files (see "app manifest") and control how to fetch them if offline (see "web workers" on javascript side)
- added %timeit and RISE shouldn't be impossible (https://framagit.org/casatir/basthon-kernel/-/issues/10), but they are not so important.
Okay that's enough for now, I've just wanted to share my ideas and my six-month goals. Hopefully you and others will be interested, and awesome extensions to Basthon will be available in a few months!
Regards, amitiés, @Naereen
